Program Services

Diabetes doesn't just affect the victims; it affects the families who care for them. Once you are diagnosis with diabetes, it is important to share this information with your family, friends and people you love. You should not be ashamed of having diabetes. You will need the assistance of everyone who loves you. Latinos are notorious for foods high in grease, sugar and starch and this is why you need your family and friend's help so not to tempt you with tortillas and pan dulce and assist in giving you glucagon (a treatment for low blood glucose) if you become unconscious from a severe insulin reaction.

When you accept and open to having diabetes, the more you'll relies that you are not lone. The depression of having diabetes should not stop you from having an active life. Diabetes can be overwhelming at first, but this feeling is not wrong; LDA services can help in dealing with those emotions. Service such as:

Community Outreach Campaign
contacting Latino communities by canvassing a target population. This consists of walking door to door to every home and apartment in the neighborhoods where the classes are to be held.
Educational Heath Courses

Participants are provided with information about diabetes, nutrition, exercise, and obesity prevention.

Support Services
addresses the urgent needs of participants (i.e. transportation, child care, food, shelter, etc.) in order to eliminate barriers to program participation. Assist participants recognize the strength of existing support networks and guiding through a process of self assessment.
Peer-Support Groups
These intensive sessions, lead by a trained Para-professional facilitator, forms the basis for providing needed socialization skills to modify inappropriate or destructive behavior.
Environmental Health Advocacy
Under the guidance of a trained health advocate, participants will assess and identify barriers in their community and choose a project that will result in changes in their environment to either increase access to health care, increase physical activity, or increase access to healthier foods.
Vial of Life Program
The Vial of Life Program is designed to speak for seniors when they are unable to speak for themselves. The information contained within the vial provides pre-hospital and hospital providers with essential details that aid in providing appropriate medical treatment.
